reCaptcha – an additional method of dealing with spammers

Over the past year, the issue of data security on the internet has become particularly topical in society, as people are increasingly falling victim to fraud and misuse of personal data, prompting thoughts about additional investment and the need to introduce stricter protection methods. It should be noted that Inbox.lv has for several years been working purposefully to improve the level of user data security and, in order to prevent possible risks in the virtual space in good time, the portal uses a security code (captcha), which must be entered during registration or after an unsuccessful login attempt.

A security code, or captcha, is an authentication feature that can determine whether a website user is a human or automated software. Today, captcha helps deter hackers and spammers from misusing websites; however, as artificial intelligence and the capabilities of various programs develop, robots become smarter every day, learning to bypass security code systems. On the other hand, overly complex security codes would inconvenience portal users, as the code would become long and complicated and solving it would not always be successful. Therefore, in addition to the usual human test, or captcha, in the second half of this year we have also introduced the reCaptcha system, whose word images cannot be recognised by optical character recognition software, thereby significantly increasing the level of user security.

It should be noted that the users of the reCaptcha system include not only Inbox.lv, but also such popular websites as Facebook, Twitter, CNN.com and others.
