Inbox’s daily fight against Spam

December 16,2012

Recognizing that one of the most unpleasant aspects of e-mail use are spam emails received, Inbox is very serious about the fight against senders of such letters. We receive more than 8 million spam letters daily that are rejected from Your mailbox by our anti-spam server system. For comparison – valid letters received by our users per day count to 920 thousand.

Spam takes more than 80% of the world’s e-mail course, and it is a serious challenge to any e-mail service. It should be noted that the spam senders invent new ways to circumvent spam filters. But Inbox, in cooperation with foreign software developers, uses only the best solutions in anti-spam field, and successfully applies its own research, collected during 10 years of work.

As already mentioned, 8 million spam letters do not make it to Your mailboxes every day because they are locked and deleted by the two-time defense system that is placed on our 11 servers. This system is a central element of Kaspersky Anti-spam software that is able to recognize spam in Russian as well. How does it work? Spam filters assign points for each letter according to different criteria. If the score is up to 5 – it is a pure letter that goes into Your main inbox. If the score is between 5 and 10, the letter is identified as a “potential spam” and is placed in the “Spam” folder. If the score is greater than 10, then it is 100% spam and such letter doesn’t even show up in Your mailbox.

What are the criteria that can trigger a spam filter to recognize the important letter as spam? The more advanced spam filter is, the more of the following criteria exist, but the most popular are:

  1. the same words is often mentioned in e-mail,
  2. e-mails have some kind of weird files attached
  3. letter contains typical “spam – phrases” such as “click here to win a million” etc.
  4. too many recipients at the same time.

Of course, no one is immune from situations when some important letter will be directed to the “Spam” folder, so we invite You to check this section periodically. Finally, the best practice in the fight against spam is not to leave Your e-mail on public sites without encoded form, it will be hard for spammers to get Your e-mail address then.
